WFMW—Crystal Deodorant

wfmwbannerKRISTEN While I certainly have not totally switched over to all natural products in the home, I am making moves in that direction little by little. One of the products I use is Crystal Deodorant.

Crystal Deodorant is made of natural mineral salts, and while it is not an antiperspirant, it prevents, rather than masks, odor. I am not a heavy sweater, so I cannot say how this would work for someone that is, but it works great for me. (At least, no one tells me I stink!)

Regular deodorant/antiperspirants contain aluminum and other potentially harmful ingredients. From the Crystal website:

“Aluminum is a potentially hazardous material regulated by the FDA for its applications in body care products. Studies show that aluminum can accumulate in the brain over time and some health experts are concerned that it may increase the chance of Alzheimer’s disease and breast cancer. “

Personally, I’m not interested in increasing my chances of breast cancer or Alzheimer’s.

The initial outlay for this product is more than one would typically pay for deodorant, about $6-7. But, I have had the above stick for about 2 years, and there are still 2 inches of it left, which should last me many more months.

I use the stick, but it also comes in roll-on and spray. I like that it has no scent (as in, an absence of any scent at all, not “unperfumed” like regular products), but I noticed that it does come with some scent options now. You apply the stick when you get out of the shower and are still damp. It is not sticky, leaves no residue, and doesn’t make white marks on your clothes. For more info, check out the website, and read the reviews at Amazon.

Another blogger recently recommended this to me and I think I'll have to try it. I'm glad you included a picture so I could see what it looks like.

Thanks for the tip. Switching from an aluminum containing anti-persperant is something I know I need to do, but I have not found an alternative I like. I will definitely have to give this a try!

Hurley, from the show LOST uses that. He's a big guy ya know. I bet he sweats a lot. His blog said he used it on set in the Hawaiian heat and kept having everyone smell him and he said no one complained.

I've been using it for years and love it! Oddly I have found that if I switch to a brand name traditional deodorant for a few days - I think I smell worse lol. Then it takes a few days of crystal use before I'm all back to no smell. Makes me wonder what's in the name brand that stays in my body for a few days.

This is interesting! I've never heard of it, may have to try it! I love that it has lasted you 2 years! You have a great blog! I checked out some of your thrift store posts. I've heard other people rave about them but the couple times I've gone I've had no idea what to look for. You are giving me some inspiration!

Something worth trying- for those of us not interested in upping our odds of breast cancer or Alzheimer’s . Have a great weekend!

I really enjoyed the article posted regarding harmful ingredients in deodorants/antiperspirants. It was very informative, and I believe you are absolutely correct about the negative impact that harmful chemicals can have on our bodies. I have discovered several amazing reports to validate your position, and I think you would find the information fascinating. I would love to discuss this further with you. Please email me at your earliest convenience. One report in particular is very serious in nature and was documented on CNN. I’ll send you a link.
